ANCC
PONS Presentation: Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Considerations in the NCC Patient (with CEU)
,
Available CE Hour(s): 1.0
Pathophysiological changes due to critical illness and neurological injury such as systemic inflammation, body fluid
volume alterations, hemodynamic instability and organ dysfunction combined with ICU management might affect the
pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of drugs. If not taken into consideration, PK and PD alterations might
lead to therapy failure, increase in adverse drug reactions, longer hospital stay and increased overall healthcare cost.
This presentation will highlight those changes and provide some tips on how to optimize pharmacotherapy in neurocritical
care.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe alterations of drugs’ pharmacokinetics in the neurocritical care patient
- Identify patients at risk for augmented renal clearance and optimize pharmacotherapy accordingly
- Describe the resources and principles of drug dosage adjustment in patients undergoing renal replacement therapies
- Describe alterations of drugs’ pharmacodynamics in the neurocritical care patient
