Responsibilities
This is highly responsible and independent professional advanced practice work in the care of patients in the clinical department of the University of South Alabama Health Services Foundation. An employee in this position has two main areas of responsibilities: one is to provide clinical patient care and the other is to serve as the Lead Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) for the Neuro Science ICU team.
Clinically, this professional is responsible for providing highly skilled medical care and treatment to patients as assigned by and under the direction of the neurocritical care physician at our flagship academic medical center; assists in the diagnoses and therapeutic management of patients under the supervision of the neurocritical care physician; organizes and presents patient data to the supervising physician(s) to include recommendations for appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic regimens as determined by patients’ needs using applicable medical and surgical equipment; arranges inpatient admissions and discharges at the direction of the supervising physician; performs rounds and records appropriate patient admission and progress notes; provides instructions and guidance regarding health care and medical therapy to patients, family members and significant others; orders appropriate laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies; administers injections and dispenses medications and utilizes ultrasound to augment their physical examination.
In their second area, this professional will serve as the Lead Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) for a group of 10 neurocritical care APP’s at our academic medical center. He/she will create the monthly work schedules for the APP’s and will assist the NeuroScience ICU Medical Director in all facets of running the ICU, including organizing and keeping the schedule for bimonthly resident/APP didactic education (occasionally giving said presentations to the academic group), assisting with the processes of hiring additional physician assistants or nurse practitioners for the team (as needed), helping keep the NeuroScience ICU clinical practice guidelines updated and organized. This professional will also serve a leadership role in our academic hospital and will also be involved in the education of residents, nurses and nursing students, PA students and NP students.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in nursing and completion of an approved nurse practitioner training program. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in a related field. Licensure with the state of Alabama as a nurse practitioner and registered nurse

Completion of an accredited physician assistant training program as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and licensure with the state of Alabama to practice as a Physician Assistant within two months of employment.
