PONS Presentation: Indications and Considerations for the Use of Antiplatelet Agents in NCC (No CEU)
,
This lecture describes common neurocritical care indications for the use of antiplatelet agents and evaluates the
literature supporting those statements. It also takes into account platelet aggregation pathophysiology, medication
mechanisms of action, drug-drug interactions, side effect profile, and monitoring considerations to provide a
well-rounded critique of this medication class. Lastly, considerations for the reversal of these agents are reviewed and
applied.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the pathophysiology of platelet aggregation and the mechanisms of action of commonly used antiplatelet agents
- Evaluate the evidence available for antiplatelet use for secondary acute ischemic stroke (AIS) prevention
- Discuss considerations for antiplatelet therapy in carotid and vertebral artery occlusion and dissection
- Assess available evidence for the use and monitoring of antiplatelet therapy in patients undergoing neuroendovascular
interventions (NI)
- Structure a plan for antiplatelet reversal in patients suffering a serious or life-threatening bleed while on
antiplatelet therapy
